Because of its location near Washington, D.C., Virginia has a large federal government presence, and many federal departments make their homes in Virginia. A few of them include the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Transportation Security Administration.
Virginia also has the largest concentration of technology workers of any state. Northern Virginia is the main area for technology, software development, and defense contracting companies. Virginia has consistently been ranked a good state for businesses by publications such as Forbes and CNBC.
Agriculture is also a big industry thanks to Virginia’s pleasant weather, particularly for tomatoes, soy, peanuts, hay, and tobacco.
