Lights… cameras… action! A lot of people create what you see as the final result on a television program: whether that’s the local news or your favorite sitcom. But not all the jobs in television are on screen; in fact, the majority of television jobs happen offscreen. Outside of acting or news anchoring, here are a few career paths you can pursue in the television industry:

  • Writer or Editor
  • Cameraperson
  • Director
  • Sound Effects
  • Production Assistant
  • Makeup and Wardrobe

For most of these roles, experience is much more important than formal trading, and some positions, particularly in camera and production, can be learned on the job. Internships in television are great for learning on the job, and they are vital in the television business for the experience and the networking. And don’t limit yourself to big television stations when job searching; small and lesser-known stations offer many of the same jobs.
