Christmas is widely known as “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many that doesn’t ring true. If there’s any group that deserves to have an joyful holiday season, it’s children. Most kids just want to receive a few gifts and know that someone loves and cares about them. Unfortunately, for millions of children that isn’t a given. Luckily, there are a number of non-profit organizations that help make it happen for kids who may not otherwise have a Merry Christmas. We looked at Toys for Tots last year, and this year we’re going to talk about a program called Angel Tree “that connects parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts.” It’s part of a larger non-profit called Prison Fellowship. The Lansdowne, VA based organization that envisions “a future in which countless prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families, are redeemed, restored, and reconciled through the love and truth of Jesus Christ.”
Angel Tree is just a small part of what Prison Fellowship does, but it has an enormous reach and is working towards helping the 1.7 million children who have a parent serving time in a state or federal prison. Additionally, Prison Fellowship works in prisons through Evangelism & Discipleship programs and also helps former inmates make a meaningful step forward through Reentry programs. To full understand the story of Prison Fellowship, you really need to read up on the organization’s founder, Chuck Colson (here’s his Wikipedia page). He was “the first member of the Nixon administration to be incarcerated for Watergate-related charges,” and the 7 months that he spent at Maxwell Prison in Alabama completely changed his life. Colson made a promise “to remember prisoners and their families,” and he spent the rest of his life honoring. Chuck Colson passed away earlier this year, but if you’d like to continue his mission to bring Christ’s restorative power behind prison bars, take a look at Prison Fellowship’s Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Justice Fellowship – Administrative Assistant, a Part-Time Accounts Payable Assistant, and a Planned Giving Researcher.
