Commercial fishing used to be big in Maine, and while it’s not as big as in the past, Maine is still associated with seafood such as lobsters and clams. Maine is the number one exporter of blueberries but also produces maple syrup, maple sugar, poultry, eggs, cattle, and dairy products. The state also manufactures paper, lumber, and wood products, along with textiles and food products.
Maine has historically been a big state for shipbuilding as well, with Bath Iron Works in Bath and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. Its location along the ocean makes its port in Portland the largest tonnage port in New England.
Thanks to Maine’s forests and beautiful scenery, tourism and outdoor recreation has become a bigger part of Maine’s economy in recent years. In particular Maine is home to the Hundred Mile Wilderness and Mount Katahdin, the end of the Appalachian Trail.
Not too many large companies call Maine home, but a few that do are L.L. Bean and Hannaford.
