Texas has more farms than any other state, both in acreage and number of farms. Because of its diverse climate and vast landscape the state is an agricultural leader, leading the nation in cattle and cotton production. Texas also produces goats, sheep, cereal crops, fruits, and vegetables.
Energy is the dominant industry in the state. Major oil companies such as ConocoPhillips, Exxon-Mobil, Tesoro, Marathon Oil, and Valero call Texas home. Texas is also a leader in the alternative energy industry, producing more wind energy than any other state along with its solar energy industry.
Technology is also a booming business in Texas, particularly in Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Major technology companies often have a branch in one of these cities. Some technology companies based in Texas include Rackspace (San Antonio) and Texas Instruments. Military and defense are also big industries in Texas, with military and defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing having a significant presence in the state.
