Lots of startups have created online productivity suites akin to Microsoft Office, and Google Apps has really changed the way that a lot of people work on their computers. But what if you want to edit an image, song, movie, or do some other creative endeavor? Software for that kind of stuff is still really expensive, right? Nope. Aviary is a New York City based company that “is on a mission to make creation accessible to artists of all genres, from graphic design to audio editing.” They provide a suite of free online tools that are way more powerful than most cloud-based software that you’re used to.

What do you want most in the world? Maybe it’s changed since yesterday because of something left under the Christmas tree, but chances are that changing the answer to that question isn’t so easy. For a small boy begging on the streets of India, the answer was pretty simple. A pencil. Adam Braun is a guy who gave a kid a pencil, a smile, and a promise of a better future. Adam Braun continued backpacking across the world, and giving out pens and pencils—thousands of them. Eventually his idea turned into a non-profit organization called Pencils of Promise. They’re based in New York City, and they now build schools for the 75 million children in the world who don’t even have access to a pre-school education. As important as schools are, the pencils and backpacks still play a huge role in what Pencils of Promise does.

Last night I went out to dinner with my girlfriend and her family. It was a restaurant that I’d never been to before, so I looked it up online to see what I should expect. The user experience on the restaurant’s website was pretty terrible. It was built in flash, and had a splash page that took forever to load. The menu was an image instead of HTML, and I never could load any pictures of the food. This doesn’t surprise me, because restaurants aren’t web businesses. They should excel at being a restaurant and leave the web stuff to someone else. That’s where SinglePlatform comes in. They’re a New York City based company that “provides restaurants one stop to manage their digital presence and gain customers.” SinglePlatform not only enables restaurants to publish all of the information that they want to share, but it also syndicates the restaurant’s content throughout a publisher network of “review sites, mobile applications, and related local guides.”

In the past 15 days there have been 1,310 spam comments left on One Day, One Job. Luckily, I have software that identifies most of them, so that I only have to look at 10 or so a day and decide for myself whether they are spam or not. Spammers are constantly looking for ways to pitch their wares, and most of what they do is completely automated. That means that one of the best ways to conquer spam is to verify that the person leaving a comment, signing up for a site, or sending a message is actually a human and not a computer pretending to be a human. One of the most successful ways to combat automated spam these days is called the CAPTCHA (here’s the Wikipedia entry) or “completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart.” I’m sure you’re familiar with CAPTCHAs, and you probably hate them. Unfortunately, they’re a way of life, even if they feel like a waste of time. Solve Media is a Philadelphia, PA based company that is putting the CAPTCHA to work. Yes, they think that they can make money off of the CAPTCHA, and I think they can too.

I’m a big fan of buying stuff online, so I’m shocked when some of my friends tell me that they still buy everything at real brick and mortar stores. It’s so old fashioned. It used to be just books and electronics, but over the past years I’ve even started buying clothes and even shoes online. Companies like Bonobos and Gilt Groupe make online clothes shopping super easy, but they’re relative newcomers compared to Bluefly, which was was founded in 1998 in New York City. They’ve made a name for themselves by offering high end fashion brands at great values, and they’re as much a fashion company as they are an e-commerce company. Bluefly is pretty small—under 100 employees—considering that the company’s stock is publicly traded on the NASDAQ, but that’s not surprising considering that they made it through the late 90s and early 2000s.

International Coalition of Sites of Conscience Logo

I’m not a big fan of museums unless they’re super-focused on a specific topic. I get kind of bored looking at random collections of stuff, but when a museum or an exhibit tells a story, then I get interested. I’m sure I’d be fascinated at any one of the “Sites of Conscience” that are in the network of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, which is a New York City based non-profit organization that is “dedicated to helping historic sites inspire social consciousness and action.” The sites in the network are “specifically dedicated to remembering past struggles for justice and addressing their contemporary legacies,” and there’s a good chance that you’re familiar with at least one of them. Remembering our history is essential to moving forward on human rights issues, and the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience ensures that our history is accessible and delivered in a compelling way.

Social networks are great. They help us maintain relationships more easily, while also introducing us to new people. The cool thing is that we’ve just scratched the surface with social networking. There’s a lot more value to come, and one of the things that I’m most excited about is social recommendations. Whether I’m looking for a restaurant, hotel, pair of shoes, or car, I want to be able to leverage the collective knowledge of my friends. Hunch is a New York City based startup that is doing exactly that. They’re “personalizing the Internet” by building “a ‘taste graph’ of the entire web, connecting every person on the web with their affinity for anything, from books to electronic gadgets to fashion or vacation spots.” They leverage the information that you’ve already added to your social profiles on Twitter and Facebook, and they also ask you a number of seemingly irrlevant questions to get a feel for what you might like.

About a month ago my girlfriend bought a pair of boots. A few weeks later when we were in Connecticut for Thanksgiving, we stopped into a shoe store so that she could buy special socks to go with these boots. The idea of needing special socks for a pair of boots is kind of odd to me, but who doesn’t love a good pair of socks? Then I saw it. A stack of boxes that went to the ceiling. This store was ready for the holiday shopping season, and their main preparation was stocking Hunter boots. Lots of them. Uggs were hot for a while, but now people want boots that can actually get wet, and they’re flocking to Hunter Boot. The company is headquartered in Scotland, but they have offices in London and New York too. They’ve made their name on their Wellington boots—Wellies for short, and though they’ve been around for more than 150 years, they’re seeing quite a surge in popularity right now.

Yesterday we took a look at a performance marketing firm called Prospectiv that specializes in helping brands reach women online. Today we’re going to continue with the female focus and take a look at BlogHer, a Belmont, CA based community and media company for women. In fact, they’re the “largest community of women who blog” with more than 23 million unique visitors per month. The company was founded in 2005, and since then its vision has been to “create opportunities for women who blog to gain exposure, education, community and economic empowerment.” Believe it or not, blogging is a big business, and BlogHer is leveraging the size of its community to create amazing opportunities for all of its members.

Since the deal above is for the guys (or girls who are buying gifts for their guys), we might as well take a look at a company that is a bit more targeted to the girls. And since it’s Cyber Monday, it only makes sense to focus on something that’s e-commerce related. That’s why we’re taking a look at Prospectiv. They’re a Wakefield, MA based company that specializes in “connecting brands with customers,” and they do that with a strong focus on customers who also happen to be women. Prospectiv’s specialty is online performance marketing, so they’re primed for even more success moving forward. Currently they’re generating “more than 50 million pre-qualified leads per year on a pay-for-results basis for clients, including many Fortune 1000 companies such as Procter and Gamble, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Disney, Nestle and Schering-Plough.” That’s an amazing number, and I bet it’s only going to go up.

Happy Thanksgiving! In past years we’ve taken a look at jobs at Pilgrim’s Pride, Jennie-O, and Plimoth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg. This year we’ve been influenced by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, so we’re going to take a look at entry level jobs at Macy’s. They’re headquartered in both New York City and Cincinnati, and they are “one of the nation’s premier retailers, with fiscal 2009 sales of $23.5 billion.” The company operates more than 810 stores across 45 states. Over the past decade or so they’ve absorbed a number of other retailers, but the Macy’s brand has reigned supreme—and I bet the popularity of today’s parade has had at least a little something to do with it.

Now I don’t go to a lot of movies, but you know that I was there at midnight for the first showing of the latest Harry Potter movie. Usually I get restless if a movie goes much beyond 90 minutes, but I would have watched Deathly Hallows Part 1 until 6 AM if it kept going (unfortunately, it didn’t). Obviously, I’m not a film buff, but if I was, I’d want to know more about the Tribeca Film Institute. They’re a “year-round nonprofit arts organization founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff” that works on two fronts. They empower “filmmakers through grants and professional development” while also helping “underserved New York City students learn filmmaking and gain the media skills necessary to be productive citizens and creative individuals in the 21st century.” The organization was formed “in the wake of September 11, 2001,” although it’s not clear how that’s related to their mission.

Now, I’m not one to worry much about Global Warming, especially when I’m enjoying a snap of 60-plus degree weather in Chicago in mid-November, but that doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about the environment. There’s no doubt that our way of life has numerous negative impacts on the natural world around us, and we’re not doing enough to minimize those impacts. Environment America is a nationwide, non-profit “federation of state-based, citizen-funded environmental advocacy organizations” that is headquartered in Washington, DC. Their strategy is focused on combining “independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for the environment.” (Yes, they’re another special interest that is fighting special interests.) They’ve been around for 30 years, and I’m sure that they’re going to keep on going as long as mankind is harming the environment.

Depending on where you live, the cupcake thing has passed, reached its peak, or just started. Yeah, you’ve had cupcakes a million times—once for each kid’s birthday that you celebrated in elementary school. (Did you know that they don’t allow that at a lot of schools now? No cupcakes. Wow.) Basically, kids are no longer getting cupcakes, but adults are making up for it in a big way. Just take a look at Crumbs, a chain of bake shops headquartered in New York City. They have more than two dozen locations with quite a few more on the way. Oh yeah, and they’re an Inc. 500 company with a 704% three-year growth rate and $23.5 million in annual revenue. Some bake shop, huh? Apparently, they are “inspired by old-time candy shops and are warm and inviting with wood cases, marble counters and wall to wall treats.” It’s working!

Unfortunately, I can’t report on the election results because I’m writing this a day in advance because I will have flown to Munich last night. However, I can guarantee that regardless of how the people voted, green energy is still going to be a huge market. Renewables are big, and they’re becoming more and more accessible to average people. I’ve never been one to listen to classical music. I know it’s supposed to make you smarter, but for me, the more mindless the music, the better. Then again, I’ve never really given classical music a try. I’ll be going to a good friend’s piano recital in a few weeks, so maybe that will change me forever. If that does happen, I’m sure that I’ll aspire to visit the New York Philharmonic (also known as the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York) at some point. It’s been around since 1842, which makes it the “oldest symphony orchestra in the United States.” The New York Philharmonic performs at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City’s Lincoln Center, and the current music director is Alan Gilbert.

Liquidity can be a big issue in college. Your parents gave you money for food, but it’s all in the form of “meals” at the dining hall. As far as I know, there’s no market for converting these meals into cash, so you’re stuck on campus with the same slop that you’ve been eating daily for past 7 weeks. In the real world, liquidity can be a much bigger issue. There are plenty of people who are millionaires on paper but can’t pay their bills because all of the assets they hold are illiquid or hard to sell quickly. SecondMarket is a New York City and Palo Alto, CA based company that provides the largest secondary market for illiquid assets. In other words they help buyers find sellers and sellers find buyers for a variety of financial products. It’s not like eBay where you can turn Pez dispensers into cash—it’s for serious financial instruments that just don’t have thriving markets like publicly traded stocks do. SecondMarket is yet another Inc. 500 company—they came in at #270 with 1,156% three-year growth to $35 million in annual revenue.

As far as I can tell, most of the non-profits that we’ve featured here have originated in the United States—even the ones that do most of their work internationally. Global Green USA is an exception. They are “the American Arm of Green Cross International (GCI), which was created by President Mikhail S. Gorbachev to foster a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future by reconnecting humanity with the environment.” Global Green USA is headquartered in Santa Monica, CA, and they also have offices in New Orleans, LA; Washington, DC; and New York, NY. Though they do work on some international issues with GCI, their domestic focus is on “fighting global climate change through [their] green affordable housing initiatives, National Green Schools Initiative, national and reginonal green building policies, advocacy and education.”

Environmentalism and farming have an interesting relationship. Without a healthy environment, productive farming is nearly impossible; however, farming done wrong can be even worse for ecosystems than a smoke-spewing, toxic waste dumping factory. American Farmland Trust is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC that works with communities and individuals to “to protect the best land, plan for growth with agriculture in mind and keep the land healthy.” As America forgets how reliant it is on farmland for our food, more and more farms are being developed and losing their food producing capacity. American Farmland Trust was founded in 1980, and since then they’ve saved “millions of acres of farmland from development and led the way for establishing sound environmental practices on millions more.”

Judging from my Google Analytics stats, you most likely found One Day, One Job through Google. Beyond content development (writing these posts every day), one of my biggest business priorities is search engine optimization (SEO). If I make it easy for college students to find this site through search engines, then I’ve overcome one of the biggest challenges that an online business faces—reaching new customers/users. SEO can be extremely valuable for all kinds of businesses, which is why it shouldn’t be a surprise that a company like New York City based Conductor has been able to grow at a 1859% rate over the past three years to $10.4 million in revenue. They are an SEO technology company that works with “more than 250 of the Fortune 500 and Internet Retailer 500… to continually measure, improve and manage their natural search efforts in order to increase site traffic and revenue.” The great thing about SEO is that it’s an investment that pays dividends over the long term, so it’s an area that should only continue to grow over the next decade (unless Google decides to really mess with us).

Today’s topic isn’t the most pleasant thing to talk about, and it may even give you a case of the “church giggles,” but it’s serious and important. You’ve probably had a time or two in your life where you so urgently needed to use the bathroom that you feared you wouldn’t make it (and I don’t mean #1). Hopefully you made it, and whatever was causing your discomfort eventually passed. Unfortunately, for some people that kind of discomfort is a way of life. People who suffer with Crohn’s Disease, Colitis, and other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases suffer from a variety of digestive maladies that you probably don’t even want to think about. What’s even more frustrating about these diseases than the actual symptoms that come with them is the fact that there is often a lot of uncertainty around diagnoses and there are few, if any, effective treatment options. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America is a New York City based non-profit organization that raises funds “to support basic and clinical scientific research to find the cause of, and cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis; to provide educational programs for patients, medical and other healthcare professionals, and the general public; and to offer supportive services for patients, their families, and their friends.”
