Want to work at a magazine? You can write for a magazine as a staff writer or a contributing writer, but that’s not all there is to do. As a recent grad, you can also work in any of the following positions:

  • Editorial Assistant: Assist a senior editor or the editor-in-chief with administrative duties as well as some writing and editing
  • Fact Checking: Do research for articles and check that they’re accurate
  • Copy Editing: Proofread everything that goes in the magazine and make sure all the spelling and grammar are correct and the style remains consistent
  • Layout: Design the magazine pages and cover
  • Photography: Take photos for the magazine
  • Marketing: Market the magazine to the right market in order to sell more copies so more people will read it
  • Sales: Sell advertising

Almost all of these jobs require a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (so English would be a great choice for copy editing, for example). Also required are excellent writing and communication skills, a love of the written word, and interest in the magazine’s topic.
