Athletic teams and venues of all levels need to put their best faces forward all the time, even when the team isn’t playing well. If you’re interested in marketing, public relations, or advertising, you might consider working in the publicity or marketing departments as a coordinator or (with a little more experience) supervisor. You might also work with the media if you go the public relations route.
You might also use your knowledge of sports to provide sports coverage to fans. This ranges from photography to journalism (both broadcast and print) to filming sporting events, not to mention compiling the statistics and trivia that tell fans which players are performing the best.
Sports medicine is another popular route, with opportunities in exercise physiology, physical therapy, and athletic training. While some of these careers require advanced training, they are opportunities to consider if you’re interested in medicine and sports.
Many jobs that exist outside the sports world also exist within the sports industry. And don’t limit yourself to professional teams and venues: youth leagues, university athletic departments, sport associations, rec leagues, and schools are all great places to start a sports-related job search.
