In 1961 John F. Kennedy initiated the Alliance for Progress, “a 10-year, multibillion-dollar aid program for Latin America.” The goal was to revitalize relations with our neighbors. In 1964 Partners of the Americas was founded “as the people-to-people component of the Alliance for Progress.” It’s a Washington, DC based non-profit that works to “build partnerships that create opportunity, foster understanding, and solve real-life problems.” This is done through a chapter model that encourages countries and states to build north-south partnerships.
Partners of the Americas works in a wide range of areas including Agriculture and Food Security, Sports for Development, Youth and Children, Higher Education, Climate Change and Environmental Protection, Professional Leadership Exchanges, Civil Society and Governance, and Women and Gender Equality. You can read up on the details of all of these programs here. The common theme is how Partners of the Americas builds real partnerships between human beings to make both sides better off. If you’d like to work towards having “an interconnected global neighborhood where people and organizations reach their fullest potential through long-lasting partnerships,” check out Partners of the Americas’ Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Sports for Development Program Officer and a 100,000 Strong in the Americas Program Officer.
