Looking for an entry level job or internship in operations? This is an overview of how to approach the search and a list of companies that might have relevant entry level and internship opportunities.

The idea behind operations can get confusing because lots of job titles contain the word “operations” even though the job itself has nothing to do with the day-to-day of a business. To keep it simple: Operations deals with the day-to-day running of a business to ensure it runs smoothly. This means doing things like planning use of materials and inventing new ideas to make the company run better.

After a certain point businesses have to regroup in order to run smoothly, and because of this, most large business have at least one operations department. Some departments to look into include human resources, scheduling, and information technology. Think “jobs that help the company run smoothly”.

You’ll need a bachelor’s degree for most jobs in operations, along with good problem-solving skills, a cool head under stress, and communications skills.
