Happy Mother’s Day! We’re not sure how many moms we have reading, but we know that there are a few out there. If you haven’t told your mom about us, why don’t you? She’d probably be thrilled to help you with your job search. We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but we only write about non-profit jobs on the weekends, and we like to run with holiday themes. This combination provided especially troubling today, for there aren’t nearly as many Mom-related non-profits out there as you would think there are. From the ones that we could find, very few had any sort of full-time job opportunities. We persisted through our search and found the Crittenton Women’s Union, a non-profit organization in the Boston area, that “transforms the course of low-income women’s lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families.” They turned up on an Idealist search for the word “mother,” so we’re running with it.
The Crittenton Women’s Union’s domain name is LiveWorkThrive.org, which is quite fitting for an organization that supports low-income women through advocacy, education, family support services, housing, research, and workforce development. Here’s more on what the Crittenton Women’s Union does. You should also take a look at the Voice Project Blog for deeper insights about how the Crittenton Women’s Union is empowering women to create social change. In fact, the organization’s entire website is fantastic and should be able to answer any questions that you might have before you consider working them.
Like we said, we found out about Crittenton Women’s Union on Idealist.org. We then went directly to their website to find out about their internship opportunities. We found some great information on their internships, but couldn’t find anything about jobs. They have a section on their site called Hot Jobs for Women, but that’s part of their outreach and has nothing to do with their organizational hiring. We went back to Idealist to look for another organization to feature, and then we saw that Crittenton Women’s Union does have full-time opportunities, but they don’t list them on their website.
Only one of the two jobs listed is appropriate for new college graduates, but it looks to be a perfect entry-level opportunity for someone who is interested in non-profit work. The job title is Coordinator for Family Literacy Program and the position focuses on serving “at-risk and homeless families with children ages 18 months to 4 years living in Boston.” The description goes into great detail, so take a look if it sounds interesting to you. You can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to rackerman@liveworkthrive.org. The deadline for applications is June 30th, but we’d recommend that you apply much sooner.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! To be honest, today is the first time that I’m going to be celebrating the holiday, but I’m pretty excited about it. I did a little research (yes, those job search skills also help when you need to find semi-useful facts) and found that Cinco de Mayo is actually a very minor holiday in Mexico, but has become quite a celebration in many areas north of the border. This article from the Albuquerque Tribune does a nice job of telling the history, and includes this quote from Jeffrey Candelaria, vice president of membership and marketing at the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce: “From my perspective as a marketing professional, Cinco de Mayo has morphed into a national holiday designed by Fifth Avenue to sell alcohol and excite consumership around a party-type theme.” Well, party-type themes are fun, especially if classes are over for you, so we’re going to run with it and talk about jobs at Party City today. We couldn’t resist ourselves. We’re math nerds (who have a fondness for offbeat holidays), and we love Pi Day. For those of you who don’t get it, March fourteenth or 3/14 represents the first 3 digits of pi. That means that at 1:59:26, the date and time will represent 8 digits of pi. How do we celebrate Pi Day besides coming up with a pi-related job for you? We take recommendations from PiDay.org and eat pies and other circularly shaped delicacies while reciting as many digits of pi as we can from memory. Hey, we never claimed to be cool. We went back and forth about what kind of job to feature, and even asked a math teacher for recommendations. Did you forget about Valentine’s Day? Did you accidentally put your ex-girlfriend’s name on the card that came with the flowers you sent your new girlfriend from ProFlowers? Did you forget to use OpenTable and end up having to take your valentine to McDonald’s? Have you still not changed your Facebook status to “In a Relationship,” even though it’s been 4 months? If so, you’re in the doghouse. Instead of focusing on the trouble you’re in and writing about jobs at a company that makes dog houses (we couldn’t find any, anyways), we’re going to talk about a company that has great entry-level jobs and might even help you get out of the dog house. A lot of people say that job searching is like dating. That metaphor has been played out, and we’re not going to write an article on How to Use Google to Find a Girlfriend. We are going to talk about how you can use your surplus of Valentine’s Day love to find a job or a date at eHarmony, since randomly poking people you think are cute on Facebook isn’t going to get you a date (nor will doing the equivalent on LinkedIn get you a job). eHarmony is a dating site that matches people based on a scientific approach to compatibility. We’ve never used it, but the couples on their commercials seem pretty darned happy; moreover, on average, 90 people get married from eHarmony every day. With so much success, there has been an upcropping of sites that claim to be “the eHarmony of jobs,” but we’re pretty skeptical of this approach. If most companies can’t even put together good job descriptions, how can they be expected to write an organizational profile that will yield accurate results when put into a compatibility algorithm? Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, and you told your sweetheart that you’d make a reservation and take care of the dinner plans. You forgot/procrastinated. You’re one of those people who is petrified by phone interactions. For some reason the simple task of picking up a phone and dialing a restaurant to make a reservation intimidates you to no end. Shoot, you stared at the phone for 3 hours before you built up the courage to call your date to ask him or her out in the first place. Why can’t you just make a reservation online?
If you’re going to be an effective job searcher, you should probably try to get over this phobia before your first phone interview. Calling around for reservations might be good practice, but we understand that Valentine’s Day can be stressful enough. We’ll let you off the hook just this once. You can use OpenTable.com, a site that lets you make reservations at some of the best restaurants in the country with the click of the mouse. All you need to do is enter your location and the date and time you’d like to book, and they’ll show you what’s still available in your area. I first learned about ProFlowers during my freshman year of college. I didn’t have a Valentine, but I wanted to send my mom flowers to let her know that although I had moved away, I hadn’t forgotten about her. During my junior year, I finally got a girlfriend and realized that I was in the awkward situation of having to do Valentine’s Day only a month into my new relationship. I really liked this girl, so I wanted to do my best to impress her. I had an exam and an essay due on the 15th, but that wasn’t going to stop me from executing my plan for a perfect first meaningful Valentine’s Day. The only easy part was picking out an arrangement from ProFlowers and having them delivered directly to her dorm room. I barely got everything I had to do done as the day flew by, and my chronically over-punctual self had to delay picking my new girlfriend up for our date by half an hour. If you’ve never spent time in upstate New York or the mid-Atlantic, you probably don’t even know what Wegmans is. The One Day, One Job team is made up of Cornell kids, so we developed quite the obsession with the supermarket chain during what we call our “time on the hill.” For those of you who aren’t blessed with a Wegmans in your college town, we’ll fill you in. Wegmans is the best supermarket in the world. Wegmans is an acceptable place to take a date for dinner. Wegmans is the place to go when you decide to bake cookies at 3:00 A.M. Wegmans is the thing you miss most about college after you graduate. The Super Bowl is over, which is heartbreaking for all you football fans. I’d make reference to the outcome of how either the Pats pulled off a perfect season or Eli Manning finally lived up to his last name and got himself a ring, but I wrote this post a few days in advance because I’m in Costa Rica fishing. I probably only watched half the game before going to bed so that I can wake up at 5 AM to get on a boat. I also only saw commercials in Spanish, which are not the same Super Bowl commercials that we’ve all come to love (by the way, don’t be influenced by the big job boards buying Super Bowl ad space, they’re still a really bad way to find authentic information for your job search).
