Some of Australia’s primary industries include mining and manufacturing (particularly industrial equipment and chemicals). Mining in particular has become a growing industry recently in western and northern Australia.
Services make up almost 75% of Australia’s labor force as of 2009. This includes tourism, communications, education, health care, and other service-oriented industries.
While agriculture is a small industry by GDP in Australia thanks to a large portion of the country lacking in arable land, much of the food grown and later processed is exported, adding significantly to the country’s economy.
Despite the world economy, the four biggest banks of Australia–National Australia Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group–were ranked 18 through 21 in the world’s safest banks by Global Finance magazine in 2012.
