Looking for an entry level job or internship in cartography? This is an overview of how to approach the search and a list of companies that might have relevant entry level and internship opportunities.

Cartography is the art and science of making maps. A cartographer, one who makes maps, analyzes information gathered in geographic areas to create maps. They can work in a number of places, such as federal and local governments, architecture and engineering firms, and management and consulting firms.

The cartographer’s job is typically an indoor job, but sometimes they need to do fieldwork in order to verify map information. Some other activities a cartographer may find themselves doing in a typical day may include:

Collecting geographic data from surveys and images
Preparing maps, sometimes on a theme
Updating and correcting existing maps
Learning new technologies in order to use them for mapmaking

To get started in cartography, you typically need a bachelor’s degree with a focus in cartography or a related field, such as geography, forestry, or engineering. However, it’s also possible to start out as a surveyor and then transition into cartography.
