Food is the biggest industry in the Netherlands, including agriculture and food processing. Major products include fruits and vegetables such as chilis and tomatoes, grains, and livestock. The Netherlands also specializes in exporting foodstuffs.
Other major industries include chemical production, machinery, and fuel. One of the largest gas fields in the world is in the Netherlands near Slochteren. Additionally, the Netherlands’ location gives it easy access to other European countries; the port of Rotterdam is the fifth largest in Europe.
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, as well as the finance and business capital. Other major cities include Rotterdam and The Hague.
A few major companies with a U.S. presence that are based in the Netherlands include ING Group, Royal Dutch Shell (yes, the oil and gas company), TomTom, and Heineken International.
