If you’ve been doing some online holiday shopping, you may have noticed a new Internet trend. Once you visit a company’s site, you keep seeing their ads on every other site you go to. It’s called retargeting, and it’s the next big thing in Internet marketing/advertising. Why? Because it’s often cheaper than other forms of advertising, yet way more effective. The way it works is that companies drop a cookie (see the Wikipedia entry on cookies to learn more) on your computer when you visit their website. Ad networks can read this cookie, and they know to show you ads for products that you’ve already shown interest in (which means that you’re way more likely to buy). Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of ads for Bonobos and TOMS Shoes. Hopefully you haven’t been shopping for anything too embarrassing. Anyway, retargeting is taking off, and one of the big names in the business is Tempe, AZ based FetchBack. In fact, they’ve already been acquired, but they still seem to be running independently.
Chances are that you never read my article on it, but I actually came up with using the idea of using Facebook ads to target recruiters with your résumé. It’s a pretty cool tactic, but imagine if you could take it one step further. What if after viewing your résumé, the recruiter was constantly bombarded with ads with your face on them. Every site he or she visited would have a message from you. Ok, you might freak the person out, but you might just create enough curiosity to get them to call you for an interview. Now, we haven’t really talked about FetchBack much, but if you understand retargeting, then you understand FetchBack. It’s a really cool business, and it’s still pretty new. There’s a lot of room for growth, and FetchBack appears to be one of the leaders in the industry. They claim to have delivered more than half a billion dollars in ROI for their customers who include eVite, True Religion, and Fujitsu. If you want to get into retargeting, check out jobs at FetchBack. Right now they have a number of jobs posted that seem suitable for new or recent grads including Sales Support Administrator and Small Business Sales Coordinator. And if you don’t see anything you like, they offer a General Resume Submission Form. If online advertising is your thing, FetchBack might be a great place to get a start.
