After I graduated, I decided to get my finances in order. I read a few books like the Bitcoin Code – and then cashed out savings bonds, combined bank accounts, and opened a Scottrade account so that I could start investing. This had obvious benefits, but it was also a project for me to work on during my job search. By analyzing investment ideas and managing a (very small) portfolio, I was developing new skills while giving myself something to talk about during job interviews. I highly recommend doing something like this yourself, but if it’s just not for you, you may want to take a look at Betterment. They’re a New York, NY based company that helps “people make smart decisions with their money.” Actually, I’m not sure if that’s a good way to put it. They make investing frictionless and take away any excuse that you’ve been using not to invest (besides the “I have absolutely no money to invest” excuse).
Betterment is about simplifying decisions. To get started all you have to do is link your bank account to your Betterment account, transfer money, and answer a few questions about your investing goals and risk tolerance. They do the rest for you. Betterment’s investment choices are based on Modern Portfolio Theory, which is all about risk allocation and diversification. Betterment’s online interface is beautiful and easy to use–it’s just another way they’re doing everything they can to eliminate your excuses for not investing. Betterment’s business model is much like that of any other investment fund–they take a fee. The difference with Betterment is that the fee is minuscule at .15% to .35% of funds managed. If you’re excited about Betterment’s approach to investing, then you need to check out their Jobs page. Right now they have the following openings:
