Right now I’m in the process of getting some of my friends together to coordinate my bachelor party. I have less than zero interest in the traditional approach, so I’m looking for some good outdoor activities for a bunch of dudes. We haven’t decided where we’re going yet, but ideally we’ll rent a house instead of staying in a hotel. One of the best places to find vacation rentals is HomeAway. They’re an Austin, TX based company that offers “the world’s leading online marketplace of vacation rentals, with sites representing over 711,000 paid listings of vacation rental homes in 171 countries.” I figured that VRBO.com was their biggest/most similar competitor, but it turns out that they own them. I guess maybe the biggest competitor is Airbnb then, though they serve a slightly different market (more apartments fewer houses).
HomeAway’s other properties include VacationRentals.com, HomeAway.co.uk, OwnersDirect.co.uk, HomeAway.de, Abritel.fr, Homelidays.com, HomeAway.es, Toprural.com, AlugueTemporada.com.br, HomeAway.com.au, and BedandBreakfast.com. As you can see, they have a significant presence in quite a few international markets. HomeAway is one of those no-brainer Internet startups. People have been renting out their vacation homes for about as long as regular people have had vacation homes. Anything that makes it easier for owners and renters to connect is going successful. But it’s not the idea that explains HomeAway’s success (I’ll bet hundreds of other startups have tried to serve the same market). The fact that since they were founded in 2005 they’ve been able to gain such a dominant market presence in an industry that was previously so fragmented says a lot about how they operate.
