When online video really started taking off, a ton of companies went to work figuring out how to monetize all of the new content. Most were focused on advertising, and they generally seemed to converge on the pre-roll ad as the most effective (and possibly most annoying) format. For every type of media, advertisers will try to find a way to use it to get their messages noticed; however, images seem to have been largely ignored even though they’re a huge part of the Internet. Sure, a lot of companies have put ads alongside images, but Luminate is putting them in the actual images. The Mountain View, CA based company has had a lot of success with this format considering that they are “serving more than 180 million users and over 6 billion image views each month.”
While online image technology hasn’t changed all that much over the past twenty years (we’re still generally using the same formats), the way that we interact with images has changed a lot. People can look at thousands of images in a sitting, and many of these images are high quality or animated (this drives up bandwidth costs for publishers). Luminate makes this kind of user activity profitable for publishers. Their “platform combines computer vision, machine learning, and crowdsourcing technology to deliver the optimal Visually Targeted ads and content to images.” You can see it in action by visiting Luminate.com. I actually don’t find the ads all that intrusive, and I think they’d actually be welcome if they were for something that I was interested in. If you feel the same way, visit Luminate’s Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Mobile Platform Engineer (iOS/Android), a Web Application Engineer, a Graphic Designer, a Sales Account Executive, Data Analyst Intern, and a Sales Intern.
