Much of what we do on social media sites is completely frivolous, but we all know how powerful they can be when directed in the right way. Whether it’s raising money, awareness, or a volunteer force, there’s no better medium than the Internet for pushing a specific cause. Causes is a San Francisco, CA based company that wants to be the place that people go to when they want to “discover, support and organize campaigns, fundraisers, and petitions around the issues” that matter to them and their communities.

What Are Your Causes?

Causes relaunched only a few months ago. They used to be very tied into Facebook (Sean Parker is the Founder and Dustin Moskovitz is an investor)–they were a launching partner for Facebook Platform–but they recently pushed for independence (though they’re trying to reactivate the 186 million users that they acquired with the old model). This article does a great job of explaining where Causes is headed, and this video gives a more promotional view of the site:

The business model is based on “native” advertising, which could be really interesting if they are able to rebuild their user base. If you’d like to play a role in doing that, check out Causes’ Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for an Animal Rights Organizer, a Recruiting Coordinator, a Product Designer, a Community Support Lead, a Product Manager – Communities, and a number of Software Engineers.
