When the phone was relegated to only the home and office (and phone booths), it wasn’t a big deal to hold it against your head. If you really used the phone a lot, you might get a headset or one of those rubber things that makes it easier to hold the phone between your ear and shoulder. Now that we take our phones everywhere, holding your phone becomes a big pain in the butt (or hand). It makes your hand cold in winter, and it’s a risk while driving. I’m completely happy with my iPhone headphones, but some people just can’t be tied down like that. That’s why Jawbone has been so successful. They’re a San Francisco, CA based company that creates “products and services for the mobile lifestyle unparalleled in their innovation, ease-of-use and sophistication of design.” They’re best know for their bluetooth headsets, but they also make wireless speakers/speakerphones and develop some mobile apps.
Bluetooth headsets are an awesome way to make yourself look dorky. Most manufacturers seem to put function over form. Not Jawbone. They’ve not only developed a line of products that has an amazing set of features like noise canceling and HD audio, but they’ve also made the bluetooth headset cool. There’s a ton of attention to detail in the design of Jawbone products, and this has allowed them to stand out as a luxury product in a market that is largely commoditized. Jawbone doesn’t offer much information about themselves on their About page, but they do seem to have a ton of cool jobs on their Careers page. Here are some that seem suitable for a new or recent grad: Mobile Application Developer, Web Developer, Interaction Designer, Quantitative Consumer/Market Insights Researcher, User Interface Designer, Business Planner – Sales Support, Videographer, Receptionist, and Scheduling Assistant. There are a lot really cool sounding jobs that require more experience, so it’s probably worth doing what it takes to get your foot in the door.
