I’ve mentioned before that I’m on the board of National Coaching Fellows, a non-profit that aims to close the achievement gap by using sports coaches as positive influencers. Now that you know that, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that I’m a big believer in the power of extracurricular activities as tools to improve education. That’s why I was so interested in Urban Dove when I came across them. They’re a New York, NY based non-profit organization that “was founded in 1998 with the belief that all children, regardless of their economic or social background, should be taught the critical skills needed to succeed, and be given the support, encouragement, and opportunity to practice those skills in the real world.” The organization was founded by a former coach and teacher, and it focuses on energizing, educating, and empowering youth.

A Bird in the Hand

Urban Dove pursues their mission through four core programs. The first is HiRisers, which is an after-school program where high school students are trained to work with elementary and middle school students. The second is College All-Stars. This program educates students and their families on the ins and outs of the college application process. The third is Lenox Project, which takes HiRisers participants and sends them to camp for a week in the summer. Finally, the fourth program is Net Gain Project, and this provides free basketball court space for 16 schools that wouldn’t otherwise have access to courts. If you’re excited about these programs and want to be part of “creating a supportive, positive environment where kids can develop the life skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential,” then you should check out Urban Dove’s jobs on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for a College Access Coordinator and a Summer Group Leader. Take a look and see if these jobs might make sense for you.
