The last time that I picked up a hard copy newspaper was because I was in it. I consume almost all of my news online, and I don’t even have much loyalty to a particular source. I guess it’s people like me who have ruined the news business, but I’m not going to change. The news businesses that adapt and innovate are the ones that have the best shot of being around in a decade. Digital First Media might be one of them. They are a New York, NY based group of companies that has more than “800 multi-platform products” that reach “61 million Americans each month across 18 states.” They’re still all about the news, but they realize that an outlet can only continue to put out quality content when it is backed by a solid business.
I think Digital First Media’s name says it all. Their strategy becomes even more clear when you take a look at Digital First’s three companies: Journal Register Company (local news brands), MediaNews Group (advertising), and Digital First Ventures (innovation). It’s all about finding ways to make the news business work despite changing consumer behavior. Digital First Media doesn’t offer a lot more information about themselves, so I recommend checking out CEO John Paton’s Blog along with this video for potential hires:
While many newspapers are cutting staff left and right, Digital First Media has a ton of job openings (nearly 150). What’s really cool is a lot of them are at local papers, so there’s a good chance that there are opportunities near you–no matter where you live. Since there are so many openings, I’ll let you browse them on your own, but be on the lookout for positions with titles like Account Executive, Coordinator, and Analyst.
