I tolerate living in Chicago because my wife is from here, the summers are awesome, and the food is exceptional. Unfortunately, it’s not the best place for someone like me who loves spending time in the wilderness. That means I spend a lot of time in Northern Michigan, which is five hours away. It would be nice if I could discover some recreation options that are a little closer. That’s exactly what AllTrails offers. They’re a San Francisco, CA based startup that has built “the leading digital network focused on outdoor enthusiasts, providing 1 million people monthly with the information and tools to discover top destinations near them.”
A lot of people think that technology and the outdoors should be mutually exclusive. I don’t completely disagree, but I’ve found that technology can enrich your enjoyment of the outdoors if you use it right (or keep you safe like when I use iPhone weather apps to track thunderstorms). AllTrails is positioning itself as Yelp for the outdoors. The only problem is that hiking trails don’t usually have marketing budgets. Apparently the company’s business model is focused on offering “Pro” memberships that includes maps (offered through a partnership with National Geographic) and other powerful tools to help you plan and document trips. If that sounds like something that you’d like to work on, take a look at AllTrails’ Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Backend Ruby on Rails Engineer, a Frontend JS/HTML/CSS Engineer, a Mobile iPhone/Android Engineer, and an Advertising Account Executive (looks like ads are part of the biz model too). They’re also hiring interns in Engineering, Sales, and Community Management.
