We live in a time when anyone can design nearly any kind product and have it manufactured overseas or domestically for a reasonable cost. It’s doable, but it’s not easy. 3D printing is in the early stages of changing that. Right now the capabilities are relatively limited, but there is no better place to keep an eye on where 3D printing is going than Shapeways. They’re a New York, NY based company that has built “the world’s leading 3D Printing marketplace and community.” It’s a site where anyone with a design can almost instantly offer the product to anyone who wants to buy it.
It’s kind of hard to get what Shapeways does until you see it, that’s why you should watch this video:
From there you’ll want to read through all of Shapeways’ How It Works page. They pretty much cover every part of getting a product to market except for design. Right now there are some really useful looking products and a lot of silly trinkets that I’d never buy. I’m sure the usefulness quotient will only continue to go up. If you are excited about 3D printing, visit Shapeways’ Careers page. Right now there are a few positions to check out including Software Engineer and Distribution/Post Production Specialist. Shapeways is also hiring a Technology Intern and a Customer Service Intern (paid).
