Nearly every culture has its own take on bread. From tortillas to bialys to focaccias to baguettes to naan, there are innumerable ways to turn a grain into something a little easier to eat. There is evidence of rudimentary flatbreads from over 30,000 years ago, but we’ve come a long way since then. What I find interesting is that the staple breads from across the world are becoming luxury items here in the U.S. A non-profit that is taking advantage of this trend is Hot Bread Kitchen. They’re based in New York, NY, and they increase “economic security for foreign-born and low-income women and men by opening access to the billion dollar specialty food industry.” How? They sell a multi-ethnic line of breads that are inspired by the people whom they are training for jobs.
I love bread, but I have to admit that I’ve been avoiding it lately. Looking at Hot Bread Kitchen’s bread offerings almost makes me want to rethink that decision. Luckily, I don’t live in NYC where dozens of retailers are already selling the breads. Bread isn’t the only product of Hot Bread Kitchen though. They are training bakers who are able to land jobs at some of New York’s top restaurants (with a secondary effect of “br-educating” New Yorkers “about the tasty and important contributions of immigrant communities.” Hot Bread Kitchen has also launched an incubator called HBK Incubates that helps food startups get off the ground. If you love bread and think that HBK is on to something pretty cool, take a look at their Jobs page. Right now there’s an entry level Sales Coordinator position posted along with a few other jobs (Farmers’ Market Retail Supervisor, ESOL Teacher, and Overnight Facilities and Kitchen Manager).
