Health insurance. Need I say more? You already have your own associations with those words, and they’re probably negative. We all want to be healthy, and when we’re not, we want to know that doing whatever we can to get healthy won’t send us into financial ruin. That was the whole point of health insurance, but it seems that the opposite has happened. There’s a lot that needs to change, but where do we start? How about with insurers themselves. Take New York state for instance. They haven’t had a new commercial health insurer in a decade and a half–or at least they didn’t until Oscar came around. They are a New York, NY based startup that dubs itself “a new kind of health insurance company that is using technology to make insurance simple, intuitive, and human.”
The idea of a startup insurer is kind of scary, but Oscar has already raised $40 million–and they’re keeping nearly three quarters of that in reserve for future payouts. They’re also using the rollout of the Affordable Care Act to their advantage as much as possible. While a big part of Oscar’s value proposition is offering an easy to use interface and great customer service, their plans look a lot like typical insurance plans. The big difference is that each plan comes with a certain number of free doctor visits, free preventive care, and free tele-doctor visits. These offerings allow Oscar to provide more while lowering costs. Wouldn’t you rather make a phone call than go to the emergency room when you’re not sure if your situation is dire? These are definitely steps in the right direction. If you agree, check out Oscar’s Careers page. There are some great opportunities including Interaction Designer, Visual Designer, Customer Service Representative, Software Engineer (Android, Front End, iOS, or Platform), and Marketing Data Analyst.
