Auctions are huge online. You probably know all about eBay, but did you know that Google’s advertising platform (the one that makes them almost all of their money) is also run by an auction model? If you want to advertise on a specific keyword’s search results, you make a bid, and if your bid is the highest (with some kinks thrown in to ensure quality advertisers), then your ad gets shown. What’s really interesting is that our financial markets are also based on an auction system. This means that innovations in the financial markets can also have relevance to the online advertising markets. That’s what Sunnyvale, CA based Efficient Frontier has figured out and built their business on. Their “performance optimization platform harnesses the power of advanced modeling to optimize campaigns and forecast the impact of changing tactics.” Efficient Frontier handles over $900 million in search engine marketing spending for their clients every year, which makes them a world leader.
The key idea behind Efficient Frontier is portfolio theory, which has been used to develop their optimization platform and predictive modeling. It’s really complex stuff that you’d expect to find at an investment bank or hedge fund, but it may feel a little bit more approachable since it’s about advertising and not financial instruments. If you take a look at Efficient Frontier’s clients, you’ll see a lot of familiar names, and if you want to get a better feel for how those clients use Efficient Frontier’s technology, you should check out their case studies and testimonials. If after reading those you’re even more excited about Efficient Frontier, then you should check out their Jobs page. Somewhat surprisingly they have some non-technical positions that might be suitable for new or recent grads like Sales Strategist – West Region, Associate Account Manager – West Region (must be fluent in Japanese or Mandarin), Associate Account Manager – London, and Technical Services Engineer – London. You can find the full description and application instructions on the Jobs page.
