Amy and I are going to the International Kennel Club of Chicago Dog Show today. We’re not thinking about getting a dog yet, but we’re thinking about thinking about it. Since dogs are on my mind today, I figured I’d look for an animal friendly non-profit. You’d be hard pressed to find an organization more animal friendly than The Humane Society of the United States. They are “the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization” with support from more than 11 million people in the U.S. Their national headquarters is based in Washington, DC, but you’re probably familiar with local humane societies. While the local societies are not directly connected with The Humane Society of the United States, they do get support from it.
The Humane Society of the United States is different from local shelters in that they typically focus on bigger picture issues. They do this “by advocating for better laws to protect animals; conducting campaigns to reform industries; providing animal rescue and emergency response; investigating cases of animal cruelty; and caring for animals through our sanctuaries and wildlife rehabilitation centers, emergency shelters and clinics.” You can read much more on the organization’s work here. There’s a lot more to explore on The Humane Society of the United States’ website, so I highly recommend that you take some to learn more about how they operate and what they’re working on right now. If you’re inspired by what you see, then take a look at Careers at The Humane Society of the United States. Right now they have a few opportunities that you may want to consider including:
If you love animals, one of these jobs could be perfect for you.
