Maybe I’m making this up, but when I was in middle school, I’m pretty sure that Sam Goody had a list on one of their walls with all of the new CDs that were coming out soon. That list, recommendations from friends, listening to the radio, and watching MTV were how I discovered new music. It worked, but it was risky. Sometimes you’d end up buying an absolutely terrible CD like Pras’ Ghetto Supastar, the album not the song. Today it’s completely different. You can listen before you buy (or keep listening and never buy), and you can get recommendations based on real data. Whether you’re using Spotify, Vevo, MTV, or iheartradio to find or consume music, you’re actually benefiting from The Echo Nest and their big data approach to music. They’re a Somerville, MA based company, and they “provide the largest repository of dynamic music data in the world – over a trillion data points on over 30 million songs — to help application developers build smarter music apps.”

If you want to get to know The Echo Nest, you should get to know the more than 300 application developers who have used their platform. The best way to do that is to check out The Echo Nest Showcase. You’ll learn about all kinds of cool music based apps and how they’re using The Echo Nest’s data to deliver an experience that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. If you want to dig into the more technical details of what The Echo Nest provides, you can read their Solutions page. It will give you a quick summary of all of the services that The Echo Nest can provide to developers. The technology is already reaching 100 million music fans every month, and that number will keep growing as more developers flock to The Echo Nest platform. If you’re passionate about music and looking to join “the most important music company on earth,” take a look at The Echo Nest’s Jobs page. Right now the only position they have posted that is suitable for a new or recent grad is Engineer (and that obviously requires some serious technical chops); however, they offer internships in Audio/Music Analysis, Editorial/Research, and QA/Marketing, so there’s a chance that there could be jobs in those areas too.
