My favorite e-mails in the world are from readers who landed jobs. I get most excited about the ones who found a job through One Day One Job, but I also love it when people tell me about awesome companies or organizations that they’re now working for. While I had heard about ONE before, I decided to take a closer look after a reader e-mailed me to tell me that her internship at ONE had turned into a full-time job. ONE is a Washington, DC based “grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support smart and effective policies and programs that are saving lives, helping to put kids in school and improving futures.” You may know it as the non-profit that Bono founded–they certainly get a lot of press thanks to that connection.

One Day ONE Job

ONE is an advocacy organization, which means that it’s all about rallying support behind big ideas. That may sound trivial when there are organizations on the ground doing the work that needs to be done, but it’s actually an extremely important part of international relief/aid. An organization like ONE with its 3 million members has an amazing amount of leverage when they “hold world leaders to account for the commitments they’ve made to fight extreme poverty.” The scale at which they can initiate action is tremendous. ONE focuses on nine core issue areas: HIV/AIDS and Other Infectious Diseases, Open Development, Agriculture, Energy Poverty, Trade and Investment, Development Assistance, Water and Sanitation, Education, Climate and Development. They have 8 major goals surrounding these issues, and they’re hoping to accomplish them by 2015. If you want to help ONE accomplish those goals, check out their Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for a Research Assistant – Development. They do say they’re looking for a couple of years of experience in “economics, international affairs, or a development related field,” but that seems like something that you could have accomplished during college. You could also try an internship, since we know those can turn full-time.
