Our cleaning lady comes every other Thursay. Today is that Thursday, which means that I had to wake up an hour early (it would only be half an hour if I didn’t have to pre-clean to keep my cleaning lady from thinking that we’re total slobs). She’s fantastic. Most importantly, she does a great job of cleaning (my Mom has a history of hiring cleaning ladies who aren’t very good at cleaning), but she’s also trustworthy, exceptionally reliable, and extremely nice–that’s why she has been working for my wife’s family for well over a decade. Her English isn’t very good, but she has been giving my dog Polish lessons. If I ever had to find another cleaning lady, I’d probably go with a referral, but I might consider trying Homejoy. They are a San Francisco, CA based company that makes “cleaning services available to a broad audience, rather than a luxury for the rich.”
Homejoy is in the news today because they just raised $38 million to expand beyond home cleaning. I’m guessing they’ll also expand beyond the 30 markets that they’re already serving. Right now, if you live in one of these cities, you can get someone who has been background checked to come clean your house for $20/hour with a few clicks on the Homejoy website. The cleaners are insured and bring all of their own supplies. I’m sure you can think of quite a few other sectors where this technology and business model (taking a cut of every transaction) will work.
