Textiles have played a huge part in human history. It may not be on the level of agriculture, but they have been truly significant on both a functional and cultural level. That should continue for the foreseeable future, which is why the Textile Society of America exists. They are a Berkeley, CA based non-profit that “provides an international forum for the exchange and dissemination of information about textiles worldwide, from artistic, cultural, economic, historic, political, social, and technical perspectives.”
The Textile Society of America was founded in 1987 and now has about 700 members worldwide. They include “museum curators, teachers, historians, artists, students, dealers, and collectors.” Obviously this is a very niche non-profit, but it does a great job of bringing together like-minded individuals. The organization puts on a biennial symposium and also offers a variety of programs. If textiles interest you, take a look at the Textile Society of America’s latest job posting on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for a Membership Associate.
