Poets & Writers

Having to write about two non-profits that offer entry-level jobs each week, we’re constantly looking for organizations that serve different types of communities. Our daily posts are intended to both inform you about the organization that we’re writing about and give you new ideas, so that you can find similar organizations that might be hiring new college grads. We recently found Poets & Writers, which is unlike any non-profit we’ve featured before. It’s an organization for creative writers, by creative writers, and it provides a wealth of information and resources that not only help individual creative writers, but also improves the state of modern literature as a whole. Maybe we should get more creative about how we write our daily posts so that we can take advantage of the resources that they offer - or maybe we’ll just save all of our “creativity” for this Tuesday.

In fact, Poets & Writers is the country’s largest non-profit organization that serves creative writers. They offer opportunities for writers to connect with each other and funding for “writers who give readings or conduct writing workshops.” Poets & Writers also acts as a resource and clearinghouse for information that creative writers will find valuable. They “compile resources with real value to writers,” while eliminating all the junk that might not seem so bad at first. Isn’t it nice to have someone digest information for you and then spit it back to you after they’ve given it a good once, twice, or three times over? Poets & Writers shares this information through their website and their magazine.

Poets & Writers is looking for an Advertising Assistant to sell, process, and format ads for their magazine and website. This includes advertising on their community job board, where we found this job and you might find other jobs in creative writing. This looks like a perfect entry-level opportunity for someone who is working on his or her own creative writing and eventually wants to make it a profession, but isn’t quite ready to take on all that risk. The job itself looks like it might be a bit on the administrative side - especially for someone with a creative mind, but the chance to work in such an interesting non-profit organization should make up for this. To apply, send a cover letter and resume to jwm@pw.org.
