In the 80s and early 90s it was popular to foretell that we were only a few years away from having robots ingrained in our daily lives. That obviously didn’t happen. Even with today’s technology, a seemingly sentient robot like Screech from Saved by the Bell’s Kevin is unrealistic, but we’ve made a ton of progress. There are robots that sweep floors, wash floors, clean gutters, clean pools, dispose of bombs, and lots more. iRobot makes robots that do all of those things, and much more. The company is based in Beford, MA and “was founded in 1990 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology roboticists with the vision of making practical robots a reality.” That reality is finally here.
It’s hard to believe that iRobot is using the same technology to eliminate mundane tasks and to protect the lives of soldiers, but that’s exactly what they’re doing. By focusing on making robots more practical, they’re able to develop technology that can be applied across a variety of disciplines. This has worked out extremely well for iRobot considering that they now generate close to half a billion dollars in revenue annually. iRobot doesn’t offer a ton of information about their company on their website, but you can really learn a lot about their technology on their Cool Stuff page. If you like what you see, check out iRobot’s Careers page. The only position that really looks like a fit for a new or recent grad is Associate Electrical Engineer, but there are also a bunch of internships (and they might indicate other areas where future opportunities might open up).
