Many job seekers fail to realize how important it is to write well. With so much communication happening over e-mail, your ability to express your ideas clearly and forcefully through the written word will have a direct effect on your career outcomes (and that’s why you need to spend a lot of time on writing great cover letters). While writing is something that most of us work on throughout our lives, the most important development happens in our early years. That’s why 826 National works with 8 centers across the country that “offer a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills.” The San Francisco, CA based non-profit “provides strategic leadership, administration, and other resources to ensure the success of its network of eight writing and tutoring centers.” The centers are located in Ann Arbor, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, DC, and together they’ve serve about 30,0000 students each year.
It seems a little odd to have a writing focused organization with numbers in its name, but 826 was their first address and it stuck. Now their chapters all across the country bear the name and offer similar programming that includes After-School Tutoring, Field Trips, In-School Projects, Young Authors’ Publishing Project, Workshops, and Scholarships. To get a better sense of what 826 National does, I recommend that you read through their most recent annual report. If you want to dig into the local chapters, then go here. You’ll also want to take a look at the storefronts that each chapter operates. Luckily, it appears that all of the chapters have their job postings aggregated to some extent on the Jobs at 826 National“>826 National Careers page. The one job opening that looks best suited for a new or recent grad (as long as you already have experience working with students on writing) is In-Schools Program Coordinator at 826 Boston. If that’s not a good fit for you, don’t be afraid to reach out to the other chapters to see if anything might be coming up soon.
