I’ve mentioned before that I was on the board of a startup non-profit. We were petty clueless and needed all the help that we could get–especially when it came to fundraising. The organization eventually folded, but maybe it wouldn’t have if we had known about the Foundation Center. It’s a New York, NY based non-profit that “connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed through data, analysis, and training.” While the Internet has changed the way that the Foundation Center works, they’ve been around since 1956, so they have a long history of helping other philanthropic organizations achieve their goals.

A Solid Foundation

Foundation Center’s vision centered on promoting “the effective allocation of philanthropic resources, informed public discourse about philanthropy, and broad understanding of the contributions of nonprofit activity to increasing opportunity and transforming lives.” You can learn a little bit more about what they do by watching the video embedded below:

The Foundation Center offers both general and issue specific resources for non-profits. These resources include “library/learning centers in five locations—New York City; Washington, DC; Atlanta; Cleveland; and San Francisco,” an enormous database of foundations, grantmakers, and other funding sources, a ton of free web content, books, training courses, and lots more. If you have any interest in starting a non-profit or working for one, the Foundation Center can help you learn the ropes. If you’d prefer to help non-profits become more effective, you may want to consider look at the Foundation Center’s Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for a Research Associate, a Research & Digital Collections Assistant, and a Special Data Projects Associate.
