Last May I told you about Street Squash and all the good they’re doing for inner-city youth in New York, and today I’m going to tell you about Surf City Squash, a squash related non-profit with some West Coast flare. They’re based out of San Diego, and they’re also a part of the National Urban Squash and Education Association (NUSEA) which includes Squash Busters (Boston, MA), City Squash (Bronx, NY), Squash Smarts (Philadelphia, PA), and MetroSquash (Chicago, IL). Surf City Squash was founded in 2006 because they “felt the time was right to bring a quality urban squash program to the west coast.”

Some of you might find it funny that what some consider a stuffy East Coast sport has been brought to San Diego, but when you take a look at the effect that squash programs have on students, you’ll stop laughing. Surf City Squash has 5 main goals:
- Teach students to take responsibility for their actions and choices;
- Help students appreciate and enjoy physical activity;
- Develop students sense of good sportsmanship on and off the squash court;
- Promote understanding and friendship between people of different backgrounds;
- Engage students in service projects that help their community.
If that sounds like something that you want to be a part of, then you should check out Surf City Squash’s jobs on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for an Academic Director to start in August. It looks like a great job, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to renato@surfcitysquash.org.
