I haven’t had someone read a book to me in years. The last time that I can remember was my Senior year in high school. We had our annual K-12 holiday assembly, and one of the school’s most beloved teachers read us ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. That’s a great story to be read no matter how old you are. In fact, “reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for helping them become successful readers.” That’s why when you read with a child… Everybody Wins!. Everybody Wins! is a Wellesley, MA based non-profit (with affiliates all across the country) that is aiming to “help bridge the literacy gap.”
It’s amazing how much can be accomplished with one child, one mentor, and one book. That’s the Everybody Wins! model, and over the past year it has reached more than 12,000 children across 184 schools. This is obviously beneficial for the children (a child from a low income household hears 1/2 to 1/3 as many spoken words as a child from higher income household), but it is also extremely rewarding for the mentors. Everybody wins. If you’re ready to start winning, than you should start looking into career opportunities with Everybody Wins! and their affiliates. There is no centralized Jobs page, and even the affiliate sites don’t seem to have job postings, but Idealist tells me that Everybody Wins! NY is looking for a Power Lunch Coordinator and Everybody Wins! DC is looking for a Part-Time School Coordinator. There’s also a Part-Time School Coordinator position at Everybody Wins! Iowa. With a little more digging you may be able to find opportunities at other affiliates or with the national office.
