If we had to describe PlayPumps International in the context of non-profits that we’ve already covered, it’s Kaboom! meets Kickstart International. Those of you who have been subscribers from the get go, you’ll know that makes a pretty bizarre combination. What does playground equipment have to do with developing new technologies to end poverty in developing countries? Apparently a lot.

PlayPumps International makes play equipment that act as water pumps. You’ve always known of child labor as a bad thing; well, it’s not in this case. Kids play on fun spinny toys and whatnot, and they pump clean, drinkable water to their community. It’s absolutely brilliant! This is an organization that is making the world a better place by doing something really simple.

Our only disapointment is that PlayPumps International has no job or career related information on their website, or anywhere else on the web. That means you need to brush up on your cold calling skills and sell them on why a new grad like you can add something to their organization. If they shoot you down, or you shoot yourself down and are too afraid to cold call, you can read their 100 Ways to Get Involved (PDF) to learn about other ways that you can help them.

We’ve had a long week with the launch of One Day, One Internship, so we’re going to leave most of the research leg work up to you on this one. We’ll be finding a way to enjoy the 8 inches of snow we got yesterday instead.

Note: On April 27th we revisited entry-level jobs at PlayPumps International.

I understood from someone who knows them that most of the jobs are located in Africa digging boreholes and talking to communities. And that PlayPumps just raises money and awareness for them. Maybe there are fundraising jobs available in the US? They are in DC. They have a big goal… $60 mil isn’t easy in today’s economy.

Still, cool organization and a great idea.

I met one of Playpumps’ representatives at a conference for Global Youth Service Day put on by Youth Service America in San Diego last year. This young woman presented Playpumps’ story and mission to a room of hundreds of the most influential leaders in non-profits nationwide. The amazing thing about organizations like this is that they do really effective work with little money! And it truly is sustainable; what I love about Playpumps is that it’s not about getting American hands all tied up in African water shortage; they are providing the basic materials and knowledge for these countries to help themselves. I wish all non-profits embraced this philosophy…
