When it comes down to it, most of the problems in our world have some sort of economic root. Unfortunately, people rarely see economics as the solution. One non-profit organization that is an exception is Washington, DC based Green America (formerly Co-op America). Their “mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.” I like their approach. They’re not trying to force their ideals on people by regulation or intellectual intimidation. Instead, they’re working towards a building a powerful new economy that not only holds to their ideals, but also works efficiently. They may still be imposing their ideas, but they’re doing it purely with economic power.
If you take a look at Green America’s successes, you’ll get a taste for the kind of work that they do. They’ve “directed over $100 million in purchases to socially and environmentally responsible businesses” and “played a leadership role in persuading CitiGroup to remove predatory lending products from the market.” As a membership organization they’re continuously growing their ranks and flexing bigger economic muscles, which is really powerful. A lot of people yelling about ideas may seem important, but when people act with their wallet, they can really change things. If you like the sound of what Green America is doing, you should check out their Jobs page. Right now they have only one opportunity posted for an Executive Assistant and Fair Trade Coordinator, but it looks pretty interesting. You can apply by sending a “cover letter, resume and pertinent writing sample (2-3 pages) to: Todd Larsen, Corporate Responsibility Program Director at tlarsen@greenamericatoday.org.”
