I don’t think that I’ve ever cared as much about how I look as I did on my wedding day. I was still pretty relaxed about it, but I made sure that I had a decent tan, a good haircut, the right amount of facial hair, and a great outfit. It’s not something that I usually care much about, but it’s nice to know that I can do what it takes to make myself look good with a little bit of effort For people with chronic and terminal illnesses, beauty often becomes an afterthought. It’s great to focus on what’s important (like health), but sometimes focusing on your appearance can improve your overall wellbeing. That’s the premise that Beauty Bus Foundation was founded with. They are a Santa Monica, CA based non-profit that “delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally ill men, women and children and their caregivers through beauty and grooming services and pampering products.”

Get on the Bus

The story behind Beauty Bus Foundation starts with Melissa Marantz Nealy, a woman who lost her life at 28 to a a degenerative neuromuscular disease. As Melissa’s health deteriorated, her cousin Alicia used some connections to provide in-home beauty services. After seeing “the hope, happiness and respite these services brought to Melissa,” Alicia teamed up with Melissa’s sister Wendy to found Beauty Bus Foundation. Since then they have served all kinds of clients with In-Home Visits, Pop-up Salons, and Bags of Beauty. You can read about how these services make people feel here. It’s easy to write off beauty services as useless vanity, but Beauty Bus Foundation proves just how important it can be. If you’d like to join them in making the world a more beautiful place, take a look at their jobs on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for a Volunteer & Client Coordinator, and it looks like a great opportunity for a new or recent grad.
