I’m in Michigan on a short fly fishing trip, and that means that I’m making the most of my access to public land. It’s easy to forget how lucky we are in the United States to have access to so many interesting places for free. Much of that is thanks to organizations like The Trust for Public Land. They’re a national non-profit based in San Francisco, CA that was “founded in 1972 with goals of protecting land in and around cities and pioneering new land conservation techniques.” Since then they’ve done work on more than 5,000 parks and conservation projects, and by using “sophisticated finance and legal techniques,” they’ve had amazing success.
What I find really interesting about The Trust for Public Land is that they’re not just about outdoors spaces and wildlife; they actually do a lot of work in urban areas. You can dive in and get a feel for where they work and what they do by looking at the organization’s interactive map. You can also read up on their initiatives, services, and policy/legislation work. If you want to help The Trust for Public Land “bring business skills to conservation projects from the canyons of New York City to the canyons of Montana,” take a look at their Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Communications Coordinator – Community Preservation Coalition (Boston, MA) and a Help Desk Support Specialist (San Francisco, CA). There are also a few other positions that require a little more experience.
