My dog is getting neutered today. I didn’t want to do it, but it was medically necessary. One of the problems with having an intact dog–especially in a big city–is that a lot of dog boarding and daycare places won’t accept your dog. That’s actually not a big deal for me because I’d much prefer that Garçon stays with someone in their home when we go out of town (usually it’s the in-laws). Rover is just what I need for when the in-laws are out of town. It’s a “community for dog lovers to connect owners with sitters for home dog stays.” The Seattle, WA based company just raised $12 million in funding (they’ve raised a total of $25 million), so the market for this kind of business must be bigger than I would have thought.

Where My Dogs At?

We tried boarding our dog once. The place had 5 stars on Yelp and rave reviews. When we got there we were a little uncertain, but we figured we were just being overprotective doggy parents. When we picked him up he looked a little skinny… and then they gave us back 1/3 of the food that we had given them. We said never again. Having someone take in your dog at their home is often more affordable and way less stressful for all parties involved. The problem is finding the right person. Rover solves that. “Peer-to-peer marketplaces” are huge right now, and Rover wants to own the market when it comes to pets. If you’d like to help them, check out their Jobs page.
