Yesterday we looked at Institute for Educational Leadership, one of a seemingly endless number of non-profits devoted to improving educational outcomes. Education seems to be one of the most worthy and, as a result, pursued causes, but I think poverty reduction has to come in number one. Project Concern International is a San Diego, CA based international development non-profit that works to “prevent disease, improve community health and promote sustainable development worldwide.” The core idea behind PCI is that they identify areas with the greatest need and then deliver help in a way that can have lasting community impact.
PCI’s story is pretty cool. It all started with a doctor visiting Tijuana who saved two young lives from pneumonia. He was inspired but he was able to do on his own, and decided to build an organization that could scale that kind of impact. Over 50 years later PCI is still around and is offering programs that serve more than 5 million people annually. These programs focus on the following areas: Women’s Empowerment and Poverty, Children’s Health, Food & Water, Disease Prevention, and Disaster Relief & Recovery. Right now the only position appropriate for a new or recent grad is Administrative Assistant in their D.C. office, but you can also put yourself into their talent pool database.
