National Alliance to End Homelessness

This is the time of year when homelessness becomes more visible for many people. The colder weather combined with the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons help us remember that not everyone has a roof over his or her head. In fact, there are “633,782 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States.” The National Alliance to End Homelessness is a Washington, DC based non-profit that, as its name indicates, would like to bring that number down to zero. As a leading voice on the issue of homelessness, The Alliance “works collaboratively with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to build state and local capacity, leading to stronger programs and policies that help communities achieve their goal of ending homelessness.”

Means to an End

The Alliance was founded in 1987 and in 2000 they released A Plan, Not a Dream: How to End Homelessness in Ten Years. Obviously we haven’t ended homelessness even though the plan has been around for more than ten years, but it did decrease 10% between 2005 and 2007 (that’s kind of an odd statistic though). I’d love to see more on the success story side from The Alliance, but I couldn’t find anything along those on their site. Still there’s tons of information on homelessness in general, as well as on the organization’s issues, policy, and solutions. If it looks like the kind of work that you’d like to be a part of, visit National Alliance to End Homelessness’ Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Conference Associate, a Program and Policy Associate, and a National Homelessness Project Coordinator.
