I always get confused by the terms modern and contemporary. To me they sound like they should mean the same thing, but they don’t–at least when you’re talking about art. Modern means that it was “produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s,” while contemporary means it was produced very recently. MOCA is the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and they are the only museum in L.A. that is entirely dedicated to contemporary art. Their definition includes works that date back to 1940, so I guess some of their contemporary art may also be modern art–though I definitely could be wrong about that.

MOCA sets out to identify and support “the most significant and challenging art of its time, place it in historical context, and link the range of the visual arts to contemporary culture.” That sounds pretty cool. I’ve said before that I’m not a big art guy, but maybe contemporary stuff would get me a little more excited. One of their current exhibits includes a full scale replica of artist Mike Kelley’s home on wheels. It’s apparently used to “host social services and community initiatives.” Anyway, you can check out MOCA’s exhibitions, collections, and programs on their website, but you’d be much better off visiting the museum itself. If it all gets you excited, visit MOCA’s Careers page. Right now they’re looking for a Membership Coordinator and a PR and Social Media Manager.
