Last week we told you about entry-level jobs at Sugar Inc., the rapidly growing online media company targeted to women. Today, we’re going to discuss another major online content player in the same niche, Glam Media. In fact, Glam Media lays claim to being the the #1 online women’s property as their network of over 600 publishers reported 77 million unique visitors last month. That’s an insane amount of traffic, and that’s why there are rumors that Glam Media might have a valuation north of a billion dollars. While Sugar Inc. has built its brand by creating its own network of sites, Glam Media’s rapid growth can be attributed to their advertising agreements with a wide variety of bloggers and site owners in addition to cultivation of their own online properties. Targeting advertising to women online is big business, and no other network can compete with the reach that Glam Media currently has.
Glam Media’s network consists mainly of sites that cover Fashion, Teen, Beauty, Shopping, Living, Health & Wellness, and Entertainment & Celebrity Style. You may expect Glam Media to have similar jobs to a magazine – writing and editing with some ad sales jobs as well, but that’s actually not the case. Glam Media seems to be laser focused on building the best women targeted ad network online, and that’s why their Jobs page (which only seems to be linked to from their Contact page) says that they’re looking for people in Sales, Product Management, Engineering, and Marketing. This laser focus also seems to get them some significant, and not necessarily positive, attention on TechCrunch. If you’re going to apply for a job with Glam Media, we definitely recommend that you read all of the TechCrunch’s posts tagged Glam or Glam Media. The most recent post is on how Glam Media is using some interesting tactics to ensure that their network of publishers continues to be counted by ComScore, the company that has crowned them the #1 online women’s property. Remember that TechCrunch often has a pretty skeptical tone, so don’t use them as your sole research source.
Glam Media’s Jobs page is actually a bit confusing, because they make it seem like they don’t list specific job openings, but only departments in which they are hiring. Then you see one job listed on the page – Online Ad Operations Technical Producer (it’s not really meant for new grads, unfortunately). We’re not sure if that means that they’re hiring in Sales, Product Management, Engineering, and Marketing, but they REALLY need an Online Ad Operations Technical Producer, or they’re really only looking for that one position, but they’ll accept resumes for the other departments. Either way, they want to hear from you, and although we can’t promise that they have entry-level opportunities right now, there seems to be a good chance that they do. To apply you can send a resume and cover letter (with reference to which department you’d like to work in the subject line of your e-mail) to hr@GlamMedia.com. Glam Media is located in Brisbane, CA, and although they don’t explicitly state that that is where their jobs are located, we think that it’s a safe assumption.

I really like the idea of “Do I Know Anyone…?” I think it will be a great tool.
