No matter what you majored in, it’s tough out there right now (ok, computer science might be an exception), but chances are that there’s some sort of entry level job somewhere that will get you on a career path that you’re happy with. That’s not so for a lot of artists. That’s not to say that there aren’t some amazing job opportunities for Arts majors, but where do you work if you actually want to make a living selling your art? (No, the punchline isn’t Starbucks.) You have to be an entrepreneur, and that’s not easy–especially when you also have to put as much energy as you can into creating. Fractured Atlas is a New York, NY based non-profit organization that facilitates “the creation of art by offering vital support to the artists who produce it.” It’s about providing artists with services, programs, and information that will help them to achieve financial security and enable them to keep creating.
If there is any group of people that doesn’t need liberating, you’d think it’d be artists. Yet, that’s Fractured Atlas’ motto. It’s all about financial liberation. If artists can use Fractured Atlas’ programs and services to run better businesses, then they can be free to keep creating art. What I find interesting about Fractured Atlas is that they take a “non-curatorial” position, which means that they don’t discriminate based on what they think of your art. Their offerings are the same for all artists, and they include: Fiscal Sponsorship, Health Insurance, Liability Insurance, Professional Development, Special Offers and Discounts, an Open Ats Network, and Advocacy. This year Fractured Atlas’ membership exceeded 16,000, which is a lot of artists. If you’d like to be part of helping Fractured Atlas’ growing even bigger, take a look at their jobs on Idealist. Right now they’re hiring an External Relations Associate, which looks like a great opportunity for a new or recent grad with some experience in grant writing.
