When I’m looking for “the most beautiful things on earth,” I usually go fly fishing for trout. Even if I don’t catch anything, I’m likely to find what I’m looking for. For other people a search for “the most beautiful things on earth” means that they’re going shopping. If antiques, vintage furniture and design, fine art, estate jewelry, vintage couture, and more are what you consider beautiful, then you’ll love 1stdibs. They’re a New York, NY based company that runs an online marketplace for unique and beautiful things. They bring “together more than 1,600 of the most prestigious international dealers” to offer a quality of merchandise that you don’t typically find online. There’s some really cool stuff on their site, so I highly recommend browsing for a bit to get a sense of what they typically sell.
The 1stdibs story is really interesting. The company was started in 2001 by a luxury real estate dealer named Michael Bruno who had a taste for the finer things in life. Over the first 10 years the business grew organically and it expanded to include new types of merchandise and dealers from all across the world. Over that same time period, sites like Gilt and Fab popped up and started selling design focused merchandise online at a massive scale. I’m not sure if it’s directly related, but at the end of last year 1stdibs took on its first venture capital funding and named a new CEO with a tech pedigree. While 1stdibs’ focus on “the most beautiful things on earth” hasn’t changed, it seems that they’re getting far more aggressive with how they approach the business. That’s good news for you, since it means that they’re hiring. If you take a look at the 1stdibs Jobs page, you’ll see some great positions posted like:
While most of these positions require some prior experience, it’s all 3 years or less. There are a couple of other jobs posted that look interesting (Product Manager/Interaction Designer, Visual Designer, Front-end Engineer, MySQL Database Administrator), but the postings are broken so I’m not sure what’s going on. It kind of seems that 1stdibs is in the midst of a redesign (I swear I ended up on a different Jobs page earlier this morning), so that may be causing some bugs.
