Mining of fossil fuels and minerals has historically been a large industry in Utah and continues to drive money to the the state today. Utah contains silver, gold, copper, zinc, lead, and beryllium, along with petroleum and natural gas.
Tourism is also a major industry, particularly since the 2002 Winter Olympics. Utah contains a variety of state and national parks and monuments, along with its many winter resorts. Some of the former Olympic venues are open to the public.
In the major cities, the economy is service-oriented, particularly toward professional services and trade, transportation, and utilities. Federal, local, and state governments also have a strong presence in the largest cities such as Salt Lake City.
